The "Nature" of Education
An Outdoor Educational Opportunity for Educators

The North Country Teacher Resource Center and the PSU CAS Conference Services are presenting a program for North Country educators, facilitated by Gary “Griz” Caudle. Gary retired, after 35 years of teaching, from Rochester City Schools, and is currently an adjunct lecturer at SUNY Geneseo. Gary spent many summers hiking, paddling, and camping with his family in the Adirondacks, and now makes his home in Tupper Lake. Gary is also a certified alpine and snowboard instructor and has written a curriculum guide for providing experiential learning in adventure-based programs.

This cadre of trainings will continue through winter and spring 2006! Each session will be a minimum of 5 hours and the combination of 3 different trainings will allow the participant to obtain 1 in-service credit. The product of these trainings will be standards-based, cross-curricular lesson plans created by participants which will be useful with students at all grade levels.

So, whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or not, come and learn how to use the resources we have in our own backyard to create lessons which allow you and your students to be inquisitive, questioning, exploring, investigating, manipulating, problem solving, and inventive! Through careful manipulation in the ‘great outdoors’ you will be engaged in fast-paced action leading to your greater understanding of what Nature can do for you and your students.

Session-I

Learning to use a map and compass, each participant group will engage in skills needed to ‘find their way’ and find out how to use these same skills for teaching mathematics, geography, and science, etc. in their classrooms. Participants at all grade levels, and content areas, will create lesson plans to use in their classes.

*Compasses will be provided for participants to use.

From this adventure came some of the best prose and poetry . Trail hiking will assist participants in capturing this as they saunter through the forest at Twin Valleys. Participants will be given journals to explore their own hidden literary talents, while learning how to pass these skills on to students in Science, English and Social Studies classes
