Cornell Cooperative Extension is Essex County's link with the research-based educational resources of Cornell University, New York State's Land Grant institution. In this role, the purpose of Cooperative Extension is to provide educational programs and resources that benefit the County's youth, families, and communities. These practical educational programs are based on research from Cornell and other higher educational institutions, and include the following areas: developing the character and competence of youth; strengthening individual, family, and community resources; increasing agricultural profitability; enhancing consumer horticulture and gardening; and improving nutrition and health. Cooperative Extension is informal and reaches out to people where they live, work, and learn.

Service Eligibility

Every county resident is eligible. Cooperative Extension seves resdients from all walks of lie, as well as all age ranges and income levels.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are an active part of Extension programs and include: 4-H youth program leaders, Master Gardeners, Board of Directors and advisory committee positions

Additional Information

We offer workshops and classes for community groups and the general public; work one-to-one in consultations in the office or over the telephone; support community efforts through training sessions for schools and organizations; recruit and train volunteers; distribute newsletters and letter series, pamphlets, booklets, and publications; and reach out to residents with regularly published newspaper articles. In addition, Cooperative Extension has distance learning and satellit downlink capabilities.
