Services Provided

The Family Corner is a Family-Based Treatment program designed to serve up to 20 seriously emotionally disturbed children and youth who require individualized, intensive treatment in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. The census is divided among the three counties: optimally - Clinton 10, Essex 5, Franklin 5, however actual numbers may fluctuate due to referrals, admissions, discharges, and issues related to placement and matching. The program is intended to serve as an alternative to more restrictive levels of care such as a residential treatment facility (RTF) or an inpatient psychiatric hospital. The program allows these children to remain in their community while involved in treatment. The program is considered by New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) to be as restrictive a placement as an OMH Certified Group Home setting. The purpose of the program is to train surrogate families (Professional Parents) to maintain and treat seriously emotionally disturbed children and youth in their homes. The model includes strong supportive backup for the Professional Parent families as well as extensive treatment, support and contact with the child’s family of origin. The ultimate goal is to return the child to their familial environment. The child and both families receive 24 hour on call crisis support. The program serves emotionally disturbed children, ages 5 through 18 years, who have severe emotional and behavioral difficulties. These are children who require individualized, highly structured treatment. Placement involves an intensive matching process with the goal of placing the child in the Professional Parent home that is most capable of meeting that particular child’s individual needs. Consequently, the Family Corner is unable to place children emergently.

Referral Procedure

The program is voluntary. Referrals in Clinton and Franklin Counties must go before the County Single Point of Accountability (SPOA) Committee. Self referrals and referrals from other treating agencies are encouraged.
