Creating Templates for Your Classroom

This course will provide an easy and exciting way for teachers to take their reviews for tests, vocabulary lists, and fact reviews and put them in a fun format for learning. Templates for “Jeopardy”, “Wheel of Fortune”,“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”, and“Are you Smarter than a 5th grader?” are just a few examples of templates participants will work with. Everyone will have the opportunity to create classroom review games for next fall.

The Level I, 6 day Institute offers K-12 educators and Administrators, the chance to explore the Education By Design/SPEC approach to teaching and learning. This professional development institute is an immersion in a highly interactive Student -centered, Problem based, Experiential, & Collaborative teaching and learning environment.

The Nature of Education Project

Schedule:
Tuesday, July 8th, we arrive at the beautiful Twin Valleys campus, where we will stay for two nights. Wednesday, July 9th, we will put the Project Wild, Aquatic, and Flying curriculums through their paces in‘real’ hands-on activities. We will develop curriculum projects or lessons, specific to your class, as we explore what nature has provided in this wonderful landscape. As a culminating activity, we will work together on the low ropes course.
Thursday, July 10th, we leave Twin Valleys early and travel to the St. Regis Wilderness area, where we will
canoe through the pristine boreal forests and bogs, and continue exploring activities in the Wild, Aquatic, and
Flying curriculums.

**Thursday evening you are on your own for lodging. (We will help you find suitable lodging!!)**

Friday, July 11th, we meet early for breakfast, then travel to The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks
(The “W!LD Center”). We will spend the morning with a naturalist, exploring the museum. Leaving the Adirondacks happier, healthier, and wiser, you return home to engage your students in what nature can bring to the classroom!

Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
For the Beginner

This beginner course introduces basic digital photo quick fix corrections, including lighting, shadows, contrast, cropping, rotating, and resizing; basic enhancement of photos, such as adding text, graphics, shapes, and decorative edges; and creating composite pictures and posters from several pictures, using flexible layers.

No prior experience with “Photoshop Elements” or “Photoshop” is required.

Photoshop Elements 5.0 Intermediate

This course takes you beyond “Elements” basics, going into greater depth of the basics and covering enhancing photos by adding tint filters that stimulate colored filters on a camera, adding multiple special effects, correcting
color, and adjusting color. Learn about a variety of photo creations that you can make with Elements, including CD and DVD covers, greeting cards, albums and custom slideshows.

Prior experience with “Photoshop Elements” or “Photoshop” is required including experience with layers.

Look cool-- feel great! Use your very own website and your SmartBoard every day in class! Wow your students with all the wonderful things that you can link to, show, and manipulate from the front of your room. Be in control of your little piece of the Internet and use it to make your lessons pop! The focus of this course will especially benefit individuals who already have a working educational web site and who would like to learn more ways to

2008 Wind Energy Teacher Workshop

Kidwind is coming back to NY for five more teachers’ workshops in 2008. If you are interested in renewable energy you will want to attend these in depth workshops on wind energy. We will help you dig deeper into the wind and introduce your students to the science behind the fastest growing energy resource in the world.These workshops will appeal to middle/highschool science and technical education teachers who are interested in renewable energy, physics, engineering and design.

No knowledge of wind energy is required to attend the workshop and they are offered FREE of charge. Participants will learn the basic principles behind wind energy and how to introduce students to wind energy concepts using standards-based activities in an engaging, hands-on manner. Many workshops will include a tour of local wind farms.

Classroom materials and a comprehensive curriculum package are included free of charge in the workshop. Lunch will be provided for all attendees.

A Wild Science Experience
Exploring Nature’s Educational Resources

Teachers will work with noted illustrator and author Sheri Amsel in developing teaching experiences that are science, art and literacy based. As a special part of this workshop teachers will be given several of Ms. Amsel’s
books for personal and classroom use. Teachers are asked to bring activities or teaching ideas to share. As a finale of day one, teachers will be introduced to Project Wild and Project Aquatic. On day two of this adventure, teachers will work with Gary “Griz” Caudle to become certified in both Project Wild and Project Aquatic Wild. Since activities will be largely outside of doors, please wear clothing suitable for “trekking”. On day three, Ms. Amsel will introduce Virtual Field Trips and Nature Hiking via the World Wide Web.

Reaching Your Technology Potential
Formally Emerging Technologies

This seminar is a wonderful opportunity for educators to explore the newest technologies for classroom use. Participants will create a project that integrates the technology that best fits into your curriculum and classroom. Past projects were created using, “Windows Movie Maker”, “SmartBoard”, “PowerPoint”, Podcasting, Web page design and more!

Your mission is to create and present a project within the two week time frame. Learn from past participants and your peers to make this a very rewarding experience.

Using Primary Sources and Assessments

During a week long program, teachers will explore the wide variety of primary sources available in our North Country area. They will learn where to find these local government, historical and family records and how to incorporate them in their classrooms and assessments (not restricted to just social studies). During the week we will incorporate a blend of classroom instruction and structured field trips to various records repositories and historical sights, culminating in individuals creating a variety of assessment pieces to use in their curriculum.
Sharing your projects with other participants will occur in an after school session in October 2008.

Introduction to Moodle

This course allows technology-confident educators to be incredibly efficient. All software in this course is free to all school districts. Software includes “Moodle” and “Hot Potatoes.”“Moodle” is comparable to“Blackboard.” It allows online posting of homework, resources, discussion forums and collecting/grading of student work, and much more. “Hot Potatoes” allows users to create multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions. Both applications work together to assess and grade student responses, offer student feedback and provide test item analysis with a click of a button. This course is perfect for teachers in grades 5 through 12.

100% Technology Based Research

This course demonstrates highly effective instructional practices, using only technology, for writing a research paper. No more index cards, handouts or guess work for the proper citation process, formal Roman numeral outlines or plagiarism. Teachers will learn to use“Inspiration 8”, “Noodletools”, and “Turn It In” software to create a one to two week unit that teaches students to write informative and thoughtful research papers. This course is
outstanding for science, social studies, library science and language arts teachers in grades 6-12.
